Description

Forty-one doubled die reverses cataloged for the 2019 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel speaks to the extraordinary depth of modern die variety research, and this WDDR-041 adds another Class VIII tilted hub specimen to the roster. Attributed by Aaron Laramee, the doubling appears below the left side of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello — a slightly different position from other Class VIII varieties on this date that affect the upper or right portions of the same architectural feature. The left-side location distinguishes WDDR-041 from its numerous siblings. Obverse die markers include a die gouge to the left of Jefferson's right nostril, while the reverse carries a die dot inside the lower portion of the second U of UNUM and a die dot above the first A of AMERICA. These specific die markers confirm the unique die pair that produced this variety. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2019-P WDDR-041, the variety belongs to the Jefferson Nickels series bearing Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, which remained in continuous production for over eight decades before the 2025 redesign.
