2019 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-040

Description

Attributed by Aaron Laramee under Wexler Variety ID 2019-P WDDR-040, this 2019 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling — one of the less commonly encountered doubled die classes, where the hub was tilted at a slight angle relative to the die face during one of the hubbing impressions, creating doubling that varies in intensity across the die based on the tilt axis. The doubling appears below the upper portion of the door frame on Monticello's center door above the steps, a localized area where the tilted hub impression diverged most from the primary impression. Reverse die markers include a die gouge on the lower right edge of the second U in UNUM and a die dot above the T of CENTS. No significant obverse markers were noted. The Jefferson Nickel's Return to Monticello design, introduced in 2006 after the two-year Westward Journey interlude, features a refined rendering of Jefferson's Virginia estate by Jamie Franki that differs subtly from Felix Schlag's original 1938-2003 reverse. Forty documented Wexler doubled die reverses for a single year of the modern Jefferson Nickel series is a substantial count, and Class VIII tilted hub varieties like WDDR-040 demonstrate that the hubbing process can produce doubling through multiple distinct mechanical pathways beyond the more frequently observed pivot and rotation classes.
