2019 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-038

Description

Attributed by Aaron Laramee and designated WDDR-038, this 2019-P Jefferson nickel is a Class VIII (Tilted Hub) doubled die reverse exhibiting doubling below the upper left portion of the door frame on Monticello's center door above the steps. Additional doubling is visible between the column to the left of the door frame and the upper left side of the frame itself. The coin weighs 5.0 grams, measures 21.2 mm in diameter, and is composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, struck at the Philadelphia Mint. No obverse die markers have been noted, but the reverse carries a diagnostic die dot to the lower left of the M in MONTICELLO. This variety is cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2019-P WDDR-038 and belongs to the Jefferson Nickels Return to Monticello 2006 to Date series, which restored Felix Schlag's classic Monticello reverse after the 2004-2005 Westward Journey designs. The Class VIII tilted hub mechanism produces doubling that varies in strength across different areas of the die face, with the most pronounced effects occurring where the tilt angle creates the greatest displacement. The Monticello building's architectural details, including columns, door frames, windows, and the distinctive dome, provide numerous geometric reference points where tilted hub doubling can be detected. The door frame area is particularly useful because its straight vertical and horizontal lines clearly reveal any secondary offset impression. Jefferson nickel varieties from the modern Return to Monticello era continue to attract dedicated specialists.
