2019 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-037
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Aaron Laramee and cataloged as 2019-P WDDR-037, this Class VIII (Tilted Hub Doubling) doubled die reverse variety was discovered on a 2019 Jefferson nickel from the Philadelphia Mint. The Jefferson nickel, bearing the Return to Monticello reverse design used since 2006, is composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams with a 21.2 mm diameter. Class VIII tilted hub doubling occurs when the hub is not perfectly parallel to the die face during the single-squeeze hubbing process, creating a spread that increases from the tilt fulcrum outward. On WDDR-037, particularly well-defined doubling appears below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps, one of the most prominent architectural features of Monticello's facade. Additional doubling shows between the column to the left of the door frame and the upper left side of the frame, creating a visible separation that collectors can detect with moderate magnification. The obverse die carries a die gouge above the D of GOD as its primary attribution marker. Reverse die markers include a die dot inside the lower portion of the second U of PLURIBUS and a small die gouge to the right of the I of MONTICELLO. Aaron Laramee's attribution of this variety contributes to the comprehensive documentation of 2019-P Jefferson nickel reverse doubled dies. The Monticello reverse, designed by Felix Schlag as part of his 1938 design competition entry, features detailed architectural elements including doors, windows, columns, and steps that serve as excellent diagnostic locations for detecting tilted hub doubling across the building's facade.
