Description

Attributed by Aaron Laramee, this Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling variety on the 2019-P Jefferson Nickel shows doubling below the upper left side of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling results from the hub being tilted at a slight angle relative to the die face during impression, creating a spread pattern that varies in direction and intensity across different areas of the die — a mechanistically distinct phenomenon from the rotational (Class I) or distorted (Class II) varieties more commonly encountered. Reverse die markers include a small die dot to the upper right of the long right window and a small die dot in the field above the F of FIVE, both persistent point markers that facilitate quick identification. The obverse shows no significant noted markers. With thirty-six cataloged DDRs for the 2019-P Jefferson Nickel, this modern date demonstrates that die variety production continues at a substantial rate even with contemporary manufacturing equipment. Cross-referenced under Wexler Variety ID: 2019-P WDDR-036, the Return to Monticello design introduced in 2006 restored Felix Schlag's iconic home facade, now rendered with updated detail levels.
