Description

Class VIII tilted hub doubling visible below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps characterizes this thirty-fifth doubled die reverse on the 2019-P Jefferson Nickel Return to Monticello design. Discovered by Aaron Laramee, the variety demonstrates that even modern single-squeeze hubbing technology does not eliminate all doubling possibilities. Die markers aid attribution: a die gouge sits above the first T of TRUST on the obverse, while a small die dot appears between the upper portions of the first and second columns on the reverse. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 2019-P WDDR-035, the Class VIII classification indicates tilted hub doubling where the hub was angled relative to the die during impression, producing a distinctive tapered spread that intensifies in one direction. The Return to Monticello reverse, reintroduced in 2006 after the two-year Westward Journey program, restored Felix Schlag's classic rendering of Jefferson's Virginia estate. Thirty-five DDRs cataloged for a single modern date underscores the prolific variety research community active on the Jefferson Nickel series.
