2019 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-034
ErrorDescription
Below the upper portion of the center door frame, above the steps of Monticello, Class VIII tilted hub doubling reveals itself on this 2019-P Jefferson nickel attributed as WDDR-034 by Denise McCargo. Tilted hub doubling arises when the hub contacts the die blank at a slight angle during one of the multiple hubbing impressions required to sink the full design, and the resulting doubling characteristically increases in magnitude as distance from the tilt fulcrum increases. The Wexler designation is 2019-P WDDR-034. While no obverse die markers were noted, the reverse carries three distinct attribution points: a die break in the field on the left edge of the Monticello building, a die gouge to the right of the long right window, and another die gouge to the left of the first column. These three reverse markers -- a break, and two gouges at specific architectural locations -- provide a reliable triangulation for authenticating this variety without needing to examine the doubling itself. The presence of a die break on the reverse suggests this die had accumulated meaningful wear before retirement, which may correlate with stronger doubling visibility on later-struck specimens where die fatigue softened the primary design just enough to let the doubled image stand out more clearly. Among the 2019-P Jefferson nickel DDR varieties, WDDR-034 sits four positions after WDDR-030 in the Wexler sequence, yet the two varieties involve different doubling classes (VIII versus VI), different affected design areas, and distinct die marker constellations, illustrating the diversity of hub doubling phenomena possible within a single year's production.
