Description

Thirty-second in the doubled die reverse catalog for the 2019 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel, this variety exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling below and to the right of the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. The positional description — "below and to the right" — distinguishes this from WDDR-012, which shows doubling directly below the door frame, indicating a different tilt angle of the hub during the hubbing operation that produced this particular die. Attributed by Michael Rusk under Wexler Variety ID 2019-P WDDR-032, the variety features no noted obverse die markers, while the reverse carries three diagnostic points: a die dot above the second T of STATES, a die dot at the lower right of the C in MONTICELLO, and a die gouge above the N of CENT. The presence of thirty-two doubled die reverses cataloged for a single nickel date reflects sustained die variety research on the Jefferson series, where the Monticello reverse — Felix Schlag's original 1938 design in its restored post-2006 form — continues to generate new discoveries each year. Class VIII remains the dominant doubling mechanism observed on modern Jefferson Nickels.
