2019 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-029

Description

Documented by Allen Darrow under Wexler reference 2019-P WDDR-029, this twenty-ninth doubled die reverse for the 2019-P Jefferson Nickel presents Class VIII (Tilted Hub Doubling) concentrated on Monticello's center entrance area. The doubling manifests below the upper left portion and along the left edge of the door frame on the center door above the steps, plus below the triangle (pediment) above the center door — three architectural elements that together define the main entrance of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia residence. Class VIII tilting creates progressive displacement where the hub's non-parallel contact angle produces varying degrees of spread across the die face, and the concentration of visible doubling at the center door area indicates this zone received the most significant displacement from the tilt geometry. Obverse die markers include a die gouge on Jefferson's jaw, while the reverse shows a die gouge to the right of L in PLURIBUS and another running from the rim to the upper right of S in PLURIBUS — two markers positioned in close proximity within the E PLURIBUS UNUM inscription. The 2019-P Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in standard copper-nickel composition (5.0 grams, 21.21 mm diameter), continuing the Return to Monticello reverse design. Twenty-nine DDRs for the 2019-P nickel confirms the prolific variety output characteristic of modern Philadelphia Mint nickel production, and WDDR-029's architectural focus on the Monticello doorway provides precise geometric reference points for attribution.
