Description

Cataloged as WDDO-002 across multiple America the Beautiful quarter designs from 2019, this doubled die obverse shows significant extra thickness on the RTY of LIBERTY on John Flanagan's Washington quarter obverse. The Wexler Team documented the obverse as being in very late die state (VLDS) with severe die deterioration doubling — particularly pronounced on QUARTER DOLLAR — and no significant reverse die markers. A notable editorial history accompanies this variety: the photographs originally published in Wexler's monthly Coin World column were actually of a 2001-P North Carolina quarter exhibiting die deterioration doubling, while the correct images for WDDO-002 were erroneously substituted in a separate column. This photo swap, documented in the cross-references, serves as a reminder of the challenges inherent in publishing die variety attributions across multiple coin designs simultaneously. The VLDS condition of the obverse die means specimens show advanced wear characteristics including softened design details, rounded letter edges, and the die deterioration doubling on QUARTER DOLLAR that can superficially mimic true hub doubling but results from the die surface breaking down rather than from a hub misalignment event. The significant extra thickness on RTY of LIBERTY, however, is attributed as genuine hub doubling distinguishable from the deterioration effects. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 2019-P 25¢ NMI WDDO-002, with no other attribution system listings currently known. Collectors should be aware of the photo confusion history and rely on the corrected reference images when attempting attribution of this variety.
