Description

Light extra thickness on the designer's initials LB and on E PLURIBUS characterizes this 2018 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent doubled die reverse. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2018 1c WDDR-004, with no other known cross-references. Obverse die markers include a die chip below the right side of the 8 in the date and a die scratch extending from the front of Lincoln's throat. On the reverse, a die chip appears above the L of PLURIBUS, another die chip above the R of PLURIBUS, and a die chip above the apex of the shield. The cluster of three die chips on the reverse — two flanking letters in PLURIBUS and one at the shield apex — provides a distinctive grouping of attribution markers. The extra thickness on LB and E PLURIBUS is classified as light, requiring careful examination under magnification for confident attribution. Lincoln Shield Cents from the late 2010s were struck in enormous quantities at Philadelphia, and the four documented doubled die reverses for the 2018 date reflect ongoing variety research on modern coinage.
