Description

Light extra thickness on the designer's initials LB, belonging to reverse designer Lyndall Bass, distinguishes WDDR-001 of the 2018 Lincoln Shield Cent. The doubled hub impression created subtle additional thickness on these small initials, requiring careful magnification to observe against the shield reverse's detailed design. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2018 1c WDDR-001 and attributed by the Wexler Team, this variety carries specific die markers on both sides. The obverse shows a short vertical die scratch inside the upper left of the U in TRUST, while the reverse displays a die chip on the top left of the shield north of the I in PLURIBUS. These dual-sided die markers provide independent confirming diagnostics beyond the doubling itself. The Lincoln Shield Cent, introduced in 2010 with a reverse designed by Lyndall Bass, replaced the Lincoln Memorial reverse in production since 1959. The 2018 Philadelphia cent was struck in copper-plated zinc. Designer's initials are among the smallest design elements on modern coinage, and doubling affecting them represents a subtle but catalogable hub-doubling event documented through the Wexler attribution system.
