Description

Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling on the 2018 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel manifests below the upper right portion of the door frame on Monticello's center door above the steps, a location that has become the signature diagnostic zone for modern Jefferson Nickel DDR varieties. Aaron Laramee identified WDDR-016, attributing the tilted hub mechanism that creates progressive displacement across the die face due to non-parallel alignment between hub and die during the sinking process. Obverse die markers include a die gouge above the R of LIBERTY, while the reverse shows a die crack or depression in the field to the left of the building and a die gouge below the first L of MONTICELLO — secondary markers that distinguish this specific die from the fifteen previously cataloged 2018 DDR varieties. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2018-P WDDR-016, this variety belongs to the Return to Monticello era that began when Jamie Franki's updated reverse design was adopted in 2006. The Monticello doorway has proven to be an exceptionally productive zone for Class VIII doubling documentation because the horizontal and vertical lines of the architectural framework create natural reference baselines against which tilted hub displacement is most visible. Philadelphia's nickel production in 2018 exceeded one billion coins, generating the massive die volume from which sixteen distinct DDR varieties have been identified through careful magnified examination.
