2018 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Exhibiting Class VIII tilted hub doubling below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello, this second Wexler-attributed doubled die reverse for the 2018 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel preserves a rotational displacement caused by angular misalignment between hub and die during the hubbing process. Class VIII doubling is among the less common doubling classes, resulting from a tilt rather than a lateral shift or rotation, and it produces a distinctive spread pattern that differs from the more frequently encountered Class I through Class V varieties. Obverse die markers include a short die gouge to the left of the P mintmark and a die scratch to the right of the P mintmark extending to the rim, providing reliable attribution points. On the reverse, a die gouge connecting the lower portions of U and N of UNITED serves as an additional diagnostic. The 2018-P Jefferson Nickel continues the Return to Monticello reverse in use since 2006, and the architectural details of Jefferson's Virginia estate — doorframes, windows, columns, and pediment — remain the primary zones where hub doubling manifests on this design. Two documented WDDRs for the 2018 date reflects ongoing discovery in contemporary coinage.
