2018 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-012

Description

Attributed to Jessy Gozum, WDDR-012 on the 2018 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel shows Class VIII tilted hub doubling below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the Monticello steps. Like other Class VIII varieties on this reverse type, the architectural geometry of Monticello provides a precise framework for detecting hub tilt — the straight lines of door frames, columns, and window openings reveal angular displacement that might go unnoticed on more organic design elements. Obverse die markers include a die gouge below the first T of TRUST. The reverse carries a richer set: a die chip between the right edge of the building and the designer's initials FS, a die dot above the right small window, and a die scratch running from the D of UNITED to the first S of STATES. These markers, particularly the die scratch spanning two letters, provide reliable diagnostics for confirming this specific die. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, in continuous use since 1938, has produced decades of documented doubled dies, and the 2018 date continues that tradition.
