Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this 2018 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002 on the Jefferson Nickel displays a very strong spread rotated clockwise, manifesting as two extra vertical bars adjacent to the last L of MONTICELLO. The modern Jefferson Nickel, struck in cupronickel (75% copper, 25% nickel) at 5.00 grams and 21.2 mm diameter, returned to the classic Felix Schlag Monticello reverse in 2006 after the Westward Journey series detour. Die markers assigned by VarietyVista are UVC-1884 and DMR-003, with three die states documented: Stage A is Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B shows a large depression in the field west of the Monticello building at Early to Mid Die State with the obverse also at EMDS, and Stage C reaches Late Die State (unconfirmed). The strong clockwise rotational doubling creating duplicate vertical bars on the architectural detail of Monticello makes this one of the more visually dramatic modern nickel varieties. Authentication requires comparing the extra bar features against the Monticello colonnade under magnification to rule out machine doubling or die deterioration.
