Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-001 with die marker code UVC-1851 and die marker reverse DMR-002, this doubled die reverse variety appears on a 2018 Jefferson nickel from the Return to Monticello series that has been in production since 2006. The Jefferson nickel is struck in a 75% copper and 25% nickel composition, weighing 5.0 grams with a 21.2 mm diameter and a plain edge. The primary doubling on DDR-001 manifests as a light spread toward the East, creating an extra top on the left central doorway side of the Monticello building on the reverse. The Return to Monticello reverse, restored after the Westward Journey series of 2004-2005, features a refined rendition of Felix Schlag's original 1938 depiction of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. Three distinct die stages have been identified for this variety. Stage A represents early die state, though this remains unconfirmed. Stage B is the most diagnostically rich state, exhibiting a die chip and depression in the field west of the building, with the obverse showing early-to-mid die state characteristics. Stage C corresponds to late die state, also unconfirmed. The progression from early die state through the development of the die chip and field depression west of the building provides a useful timeline for collectors attempting to determine the relative production sequence of their specimens. The die chip on the left cornice and the field depression are secondary markers that develop as the die wears through use, and their presence or absence helps narrow down when a particular coin was struck during this die's service life.
