Description

Primary doubled die obverse for the 2018 Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Quarter, DDO-001 exhibits strong extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST, the mint mark, QUARTER DOLLAR, and AMERICA, with lighter extra thickness on LIBERTY and UNITED STATES OF. This widespread doubling across nearly all inscriptions indicates substantial hub displacement during die manufacture. Cataloged as UVC-2387 and DMR-002, three die stages are identified: Stage A is a mid-die state unconfirmed, Stage B is early-to-mid die state showing a small die chip west of the designer's initials paired with an early-to-mid reverse, and Stage C is a late die state also unconfirmed. The Pictured Rocks quarter honors the national lakeshore along Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, depicting the multicolored sandstone cliffs that give the park its name. As part of the America the Beautiful program (2010-2021), this clad coin carries John Flanagan's Washington obverse. The DDO-001 designation as the primary doubled die obverse makes it the most significant hub doubling variety documented on the Pictured Rocks issue.
