Description

Class VIII Tilted Hub doubling appears below the upper left portion of the door frame on Monticello's center door above the steps on this 2018 Jefferson Nickel WDDR-008. The tilted hub mechanism creates doubling through a slight angular displacement of the hub during the die sinking process, producing a secondary impression that is strongest at the point farthest from the tilt axis. On this variety, the architectural detail of the center doorway captures the displacement, where the precise geometry of the door frame provides clear reference lines against which the secondary impression can be measured. Three reverse die markers anchor the attribution: a die dot below the M of UNUM, a small die dot above the tail of the first S of STATES, and a small die dot above the C of AMERICA. These markers form a constellation of diagnostic points spread across the reverse inscription area, making die identification straightforward for experienced attributors. This variety is distinct from WDDR-011 of the same year, which also shows Class VIII doubling on the center door but affects a different portion of the frame and originates from a separate die with its own unique marker set. Class VIII doubled dies on Jefferson Nickels provide insight into hub alignment tolerances during modern die production.
