Description

Exhibiting strong extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY, this 2016 Lincoln Shield Cent doubled die obverse is one of the more visually prominent DDOs cataloged for the date, with the boldness of the LIBERTY doubling making it accessible even at moderate magnification. Obverse die markers include die scratches running west-southwest from the O in GOD and a die scratch extending north from the upper left of the I in IN. On the reverse, a long die scratch runs north-south to the left of the top of the shield, a die gouge appears to the right of the lower A in AMERICA, and die scratches run through the RI in AMERICA. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2016 1' WDDO-010, the sequence number indicates this is the tenth recognized DDO for the 2016 Philadelphia Mint cent, reflecting the intensive examination modern Shield Cents receive from variety specialists. Ten doubled die obverses for a single date demonstrates the systematic approach of contemporary variety research, where internet sharing of discoveries accelerates cataloging. The Union Shield reverse die markers provide essential secondary confirmation for attributing this variety. A small die chip can be found on the lower right of the R in LIBERTY. A die crack runs along the top left of the shield. A die chip can be found below the B in PLURIBUS.
