Description
SKH-1c-2016-06 is in the 2016 spiked head catalog for the Lincoln Shield Cent. Die cracks that go unreported go uncataloged, regardless of how many actually occurred. The fundamental metallurgy remains unchanged: hardened die steel develops micro-cracks under repeated compressive loading, and the portrait-rim junction concentrates these stresses. On the finished coin, the resulting raised spike extends from Lincoln's head as a tangible record of the die's fatigue history. Philadelphia continued to produce cents without a mintmark during 2016, and the copper-plated zinc composition persisted as it has since 1982.
