2016 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

Strong extra thickness on LIBERTY distinguishes this third Wexler doubled die obverse for the 2016 Lincoln Shield Cent, with visible notching along the lower left contours of R, T, and Y providing the primary diagnostic under magnification. Three die gouges serve as attribution markers: a small gouge between the digits 1 and 6 in the date, another west of center on the back of Lincoln's head, and a third southwest of the engraver's initials on the reverse. These gouges — incidental marks on the die surface from tool contact during preparation or handling — create a fingerprint unique to this working die, enabling attributors to confirm identification beyond the doubled die characteristics alone. The Lincoln Shield Cent, introduced in 2010, features Victor David Brenner's iconic Lincoln portrait on the obverse paired with Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse.
