2016 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-018
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Aaron Laramee and cataloged as Wexler Variety 2016-P WDDR-018, this doubled die reverse on the 2016 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel displays Class VIII tilted hub doubling concentrated on the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII mechanics produce non-uniform spread because the hub's angular tilt during die impression creates varying displacement magnitudes across different areas of the die — maximum offset at the point farthest from the tilt axis and minimal displacement near the pivot. Die markers for attribution include no notable features on the obverse, while the reverse displays a die gouge in the field to the lower right of S of CENTS, a die dot to the lower right of the second O of MONTICELLO, a die gouge near the lower right portion of M of UNUM, a die gouge in the field to the left of F of FIVE, and a die dot in the field below R of PLURIBUS. This constellation of five distinct reverse die markers provides highly reliable attribution. The 2016 Jefferson Nickel features Felix Schlag's portrait with the Return to Monticello reverse design, struck in copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) at 5.0 grams and 21.2 mm diameter with a plain edge. Monticello's architectural detail — doors, windows, columns, and pediment — makes the Jefferson Nickel reverse especially productive for doubled die discovery.
