Description

Exhibiting Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling, the 2016 WDDR-004 Jefferson nickel from Philadelphia shows doubling in the upper left corner of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII varieties on the Jefferson nickel reverse have become one of the most consistently productive areas for new doubled die discoveries, with the architectural lines of the Monticello facade serving as sensitive indicators of even minor hub tilt during die production. Obverse die markers include a long slanted die scratch in the field to the right of Jefferson's left eye and a die gouge to the lower left of the 2 in the date. On the reverse, a die chip sits inside the lower right portion of the left arch, and a small die gouge marks the upper right corner of the small right window. The combination of the door frame doubling location with these specific die markers distinguishes the WDDR-004 from other 2016 Philadelphia nickel doubled dies that may show similar Class VIII effects in adjacent areas of the building's facade.

Die Markers

  • Obverse: Long slanted die scratch in field to right Jefferson's left eye; die gouge to lower left of 2 of date.
  • Reverse: Die chip inside lower right portion of left arch; small die gouge at upper right corner of small right window.
