Description

Wexler Team attribution WDDR-007 identifies this doubled die reverse on the 2016-P Jefferson Nickel, exhibiting Class VIII Tilted Hub doubling below the upper portion of Monticello's center door frame. The tilted hub impression created a secondary image displaced from the primary design at an angle determined by the hub's point of contact and degree of tilt, concentrating visible doubling where fine architectural lines make even slight displacement detectable. Die markers on the obverse consist of slanted die scratches below Jefferson's left eye — a distinctive diagnostic aiding attribution before examining the reverse. On the reverse, a die dot above the long left window of Monticello provides secondary confirmation. The 2016-P nickel was struck at Philadelphia from the standard 75% copper, 25% nickel composition. Tilted hub varieties in the Jefferson Nickel series have been documented with increasing frequency as the variety community has refined detection methods for this class of doubling, and WDDR-007 contributes to a pattern of Class VIII varieties consistently appearing in the Monticello door frame region across multiple dates.
