2016 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-013

Description

Resulting from Class VIII tilted hub doubling, this thirteenth documented doubled die reverse for the 2016 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel shows the doubling below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling occurs when the hub tilts slightly relative to the die during hubbing, producing a rotational spread distinct from the lateral or vertical displacement of more common classes. Attributed by Evan Goldfarb under Wexler Variety ID 2016-P WDDR-013, the variety carries extensive die markers: the obverse shows die clash marks on each side of Jefferson's nose, while the reverse displays die clashes below the center door, above the first O of MONTICELLO, and through the door to the right of center, along with multiple die breaks on the left side of the building. Die clash marks on both sides indicate this die pair experienced at least one strike without a planchet, leaving impression transfers that serve as additional attribution points. Monticello's intricate facade provides numerous reference points for identifying tilted hub doubling.
