2016 VDDR VDDR-003

Description
From the America the Beautiful quarter series, this 2016-P Cumberland Gap National Historical Park Quarter carries a doubled die reverse cataloged as VDDR-003, with light spread in the northeast direction manifesting as extra poncho fringes on the frontiersman's garment. The reverse design depicts Daniel Boone in a coonskin cap gazing across the Cumberland Gap, and the "poncho fringes" refer to the fringe detailing on his frontier buckskin clothing — a design element with enough linear texture to register visible doubling even at a light spread level. Stage B documentation records both the reverse and obverse in mid-die state, indicating that while the doubling was inherent to the die, it was first documented or most clearly visible at an intermediate point in the die's production life. This is a Philadelphia Mint issue from the 2016 production year of the America the Beautiful program, which featured five new national park and site designs annually from 2010 through 2021. Cataloged by VarietyVista, VDDR-003 demonstrates that even the light northeast displacement of the hub was sufficient to create an identifiable secondary impression on the garment fringe, where the closely spaced parallel lines of the design amplify even modest hub misalignment into a visible diagnostic feature.
