2016 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Depicting Sergeant William Jasper's heroic act of returning the regimental flag to the ramparts during the 1776 Battle of Sullivan's Island, the Fort Moultrie National Park Quarter provides a richly detailed figural scene — and DDR-001 captures light spread South as an extra coat edge along the soldier's lower left coat. This southward displacement pushes the secondary image below the primary, creating a subtle doubled contour along the uniform that requires careful examination under magnification. Die markers UVC-2393 and DMR-002 provide the cataloging references. Stage A documents the obverse in Early Die State and the reverse in Early-to-Mid Die State. As DDR-001, this variety holds the primary position in the doubled die reverse catalog for the 2016 Fort Moultrie quarter, the thirty-fifth coin in the America the Beautiful quarter series. The reverse design by Richard Masters depicts a moment from the first decisive American victory in the Revolutionary War, when the palmetto-log fort withstood a British naval bombardment. Figural design elements like the soldier's coat provide organic contour lines where even light doubling becomes detectable.
