2016 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-014
ErrorDescription
Exhibiting one of the rarer doubling mechanisms in die variety classification, this Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling appears on the upper left portion of the center door frame above the steps on the Monticello reverse of the 2016 Jefferson Nickel. Doubling from a tilted hub occurs when the hub and die are slightly misaligned in angular orientation during the hubbing process, producing a localized spread that differs from the more common rotational or lateral shifts. The architectural detail of Monticello's doorway provides the fine lines necessary to reveal this subtle variety. Diagnostic die markers support identification: the obverse carries a series of slanted die gouges below the U of TRUST, while the reverse shows a series of light die scratches through the first U and N of UNUM. The 2016 date holds a special place in Jefferson Nickel history as the first year Philadelphia-struck nickels received the P mintmark, ending a tradition of unmarked Philadelphia issues that dated back to the denomination's inception. This combination of a historically significant date and a scarce doubling class makes WDDR-014 a noteworthy modern variety.
