Description

Twelfth cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2016 Jefferson Nickel in the Return to Monticello series, this variety exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling along the upper left side of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello estate. Class VIII doubling arises from an angular tilt of the hub during the die-making process, producing a localized rotational displacement rather than a uniform lateral shift. Die markers for attribution include a die gouge appearing as a dot below and between the long and small windows on the right side of the building, plus a die dot to the left of the large center semicircular window on the reverse; no significant obverse markers were noted. The Monticello reverse has proven to be a rich source of doubled die discoveries because its architectural details — columns, door frames, windows, and roofline — contain numerous fine lines that sensitively reveal even slight positional differences between hub impressions. Twelve DDRs for a single year of the Return to Monticello series demonstrates the sustained interest that variety researchers have maintained in cataloging this design, which has been in continuous use since the Jefferson Nickel resumed its original Monticello reverse in 2006 after the Westward Journey series of 2004-2005.
