Description

This 2016 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling, visible below the right corner of the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling results from a tilted hub contacting the die at an angle during the hubbing process, producing displacement that increases with distance from the tilt axis. The Monticello building's architectural details around the doorway and steps are particularly susceptible to displaying this type of spread because subtle shifts in the door frame geometry become apparent against the straight lines of the structure. Obverse die markers include a small die chip on the left side of Jefferson's right eyebrow. The reverse shows a die gouge through the upper portion of the first U of PLURIBUS, a die gouge shaped like a dot to the center right of the left upright of the M of AMERICA, and a die scratch above the left side of the U of UNITED. The concentration of reverse die markers provides multiple confirmation points for this variety.

Die Markers

  • Obverse: Small die chip on left side of Jefferson's right eyebrow.
  • Reverse: Die gouge through upper portion of first U of PLURIBUS; die gouge (dot) to center right of left upright portion of M of AMERICA; die scratch above left side of U of UNITED.
