2015 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this 2015 America the Beautiful Quarter exhibits medium spread to the northeast and west visible in window R2 of the Homestead National Monument reverse design. The Homestead quarter, part of the ATB series authorized by the America's Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008, depicts a log cabin with detailed window and roof features that serve as excellent diagnostic locations for detecting hub doubling. Die markers UVC-2093 / DMR-004 track four progressive die states: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B showing a die break in the lower right corn husk at EMDS with the obverse also at EMDS; Stage C exhibiting a die chip in the upper right corn husk at EMDS with the obverse matching; and Stage D at LDS (unconfirmed). The progression from die break to die chip in adjacent corn husk areas documents how structural stress propagated through the die face in the region surrounding the detailed agricultural design elements, where the deep recesses required to produce the corn husk features created concentrated stress points during repeated high-pressure striking. The ATB Quarter was struck in copper-nickel clad composition (8.33% nickel, 91.67% copper) weighing 5.67 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm. The architectural detail of the cabin windows, particularly window R2 where the doubling is concentrated, provides a precise reference point for attribution because the rectangular geometry of the window frames makes even moderate hub displacement readily visible when compared against the straight lines of the primary impression.
