Description

Documented by Cuds on Coins as DC-25c-2015P-01R(HNM), this Philadelphia Homestead National Monument of America quarter records a progressive die chip across nine documented stages, labeled A through I. Each bucket represents a distinct point in the reverse die's deterioration sequence, beginning from an unaffected state and advancing through increasingly prominent die chip development. Images for the final documented stage, Bucket I, are courtesy of Alfonso Lopez. The Washington quarter obverse was paired with the Homestead reverse as part of the America the Beautiful series, which ran from 2010 through 2021. Die chips occur when small fragments of the die face break away, leaving raised lumps of metal on struck coins. Progressive die chip varieties like this one are valued by error collectors because the multi-stage documentation allows specimens to be sequenced within the die's service life. The nine-stage progression cataloged here represents unusually thorough documentation of a single die's gradual failure.
