1901 Indian Head Cent Die Chip (Reverse — Right of T)

Description

This 1901 Indian Head Cent exhibits a die chip positioned to the right of the letter T in CENT on the reverse. The Indian Head Cent, designed by James Barton Longacre, was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in a composition of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams and measuring 19.05 mm in diameter. Longacre's design features Liberty wearing a Native American feathered headdress on the obverse with the denomination ONE CENT surrounded by a laurel wreath and shield on the reverse, a design produced from 1859 through 1909. The 1901 issue had a mintage of 79,609,158 pieces, reflecting the robust demand for small change during the economic expansion of the early twentieth century. A die chip occurs when a small piece of the die face fractures and separates from the die surface, leaving a void that fills with metal during the striking process.
