Description

Documented by VarietyVista, the 2015 DDR-034 America the Beautiful Quarter exhibits light spread to the southeast in window R3 of the Homestead National Monument reverse design — one of several specific window positions on the log cabin that serve as precise reference points for cataloging the numerous doubled die varieties identified on this ATB design. Die markers UVC-2133 / DMR-035 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at EMDS displaying a depression along the upper left roof, a depression with die chips along the middle right roof, and a die gouge dot above the T of LIBERTY on the obverse; and Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The roof depressions documented in Stage B represent a distinctive type of die surface anomaly where localized areas of the die face have sunk inward, creating recessed zones that appear as raised areas on struck coins — a different mechanism from die chips where material breaks away entirely. The 34th cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2015 ATB series demonstrates the remarkable proliferation of hub varieties that the Homestead cabin design generated, with its grid of windows and architectural details providing numerous small-scale reference points where even subtle hub displacement becomes detectable. Struck in copper-nickel clad composition (8.33% nickel, 91.67% copper) weighing 5.67 grams at 24.26 mm diameter, the Homestead quarter depicts a pioneer cabin with detailed fenestration. The window numbering system (R1, R2, R3, etc.) used by VarietyVista for this design creates a standardized positional vocabulary that allows precise communication of doubling locations across the collecting community.
