2014 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-033
ErrorDescription
Discovered by Scott Holliday and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2014-P WDDR-033, this Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel displays Class VIII tilted hub doubling below the upper right portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of the Return to Monticello reverse. The upper-right focus on the doorframe distinguishes this from other 2014-P WDDR entries that show Class VIII effects in different doorframe locations — upper left, lower center, or along the sides — with each representing a distinct working die where the hub tilted at a slightly different angle or position during the sinking process. An obverse die marker places a die gouge to the right of Jefferson's ear. Reverse markers include a die gouge inside the lower portion of N of UNUM, a die gouge above the F of FIVE, and a die gouge to the upper right of the long left window — three dispersed markers that collectively fingerprint this specific working die. The 2014-P Jefferson Nickel was struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel composition at 5.00 grams on 21.2mm planchets. The WDDR number of 033 indicates at least 33 doubled die reverse varieties have been cataloged for the 2014-P Jefferson Nickel alone, illustrating the scale of modern die variety research on this denomination. Examine the upper right doorframe area under 7x to 10x magnification for the secondary contour created by the tilted hub impression.
