2014 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

First in the Wexler catalog of doubled die reverses for the 2014 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, WDDR-001 presents Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling with close spread visible below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. The close spread indicates that the hub tilted only slightly during the secondary impression, placing the doubled image near the primary design rather than widely separated from it — a subtlety best resolved with magnification of five times or greater. A die crack running across the top of the dome provides a distinctive and easily located attribution marker on the reverse, while a small die dot between the long and small right windows near the roofline offers a secondary confirmation point. On the obverse, a small die dot in the upper left portion of Jefferson's forehead near the hairline serves as the identifying die marker for this specific working die. The convergence of tilted hub doubling with a dome crack and multiple die dots creates a variety with several independent diagnostic features, making WDDR-001 one of the more confidently attributable Jefferson Nickel doubled dies from recent production years.
