2014 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-026

Description

Exhibiting Class VIII (Tilted Hub) doubling, WDDR-026 on the 2014-P Jefferson Nickel shows displacement inside the triangle formed over the center door above the steps of Monticello. This triangular pediment area is a focal point for variety hunters on Jefferson Nickels because its geometric lines and enclosed space make even slight doubling readily apparent. Tilted Hub doubling produces a displacement pattern that varies in direction and magnitude across the die surface, governed by the angle and axis of the hub's tilt during the hubbing process. A die gouge above the Y of LIBERTY marks the obverse, while a die scratch inside the lower loop of the first S of STATES provides the reverse diagnostic. The 2014-P Jefferson Nickel features the standard Monticello reverse that returned in 2006 following the Westward Journey program of 2004-2005. Monticello's architectural details — doors, windows, columns, and pediments — provide unusually rich territory for detecting hub doubling compared to simpler coin designs.
