Description

Attributed by Aaron Laramee, the 2014 WDDR-023 exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling below the upper right portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello on this Philadelphia Mint Jefferson nickel. Class VIII doubling results from a tilted hub during the die-making process, creating a distinctive angular displacement visible on affected design elements. The reverse carries several useful die markers: a die gouge above the upper right side of the triangle above the center steps, a small die gouge above the I of MONTICELLO, and a die gouge to the right of the fourth column. No obverse die markers were noted. This variety is cataloged under Wexler designation 2014-P WDDR-023. The Monticello reverse of the Jefferson nickel, with its intricate architectural details including columns, windows, and steps, provides numerous surfaces where hub doubling can manifest, making the series a productive hunting ground for variety specialists working with modern coinage.
