2014 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-021
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Jessy Gozum, the 2014 WDDR-021 Jefferson nickel from Philadelphia exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling results from a tilted hub impression during die preparation, producing a characteristic spread pattern distinct from rotational or offset varieties. Die markers on the obverse include a small die dot above the dotted lowercase i of Liberty in the script-style inscription. The reverse carries two die dots on the center door, a die gouge to the lower left of the U in UNITED, and a die gouge in the lower left corner of the left arch. The Wexler designation is 2014-P WDDR-021. The Monticello reverse of the Jefferson nickel, depicting Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate, has been a prolific source of Class VIII doubled die varieties, as the architectural details of the building's facade, particularly the door frames and steps, readily reveal even subtle tilted hub effects.
