2014 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-018
ErrorDescription
Jessy Gozum's attribution of WDDR-018 on the 2014-P Jefferson Nickel, cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2014-P WDDR-018, identifies a Class VIII tilted hub doubling pattern showing below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. The below-left positioning of the secondary impression on the door frame maps the tilt axis orientation: the hub's tilt displaced the secondary impression downward and to the left of the primary struck design in this area of the die, creating a shadow line that follows the architectural contour of the lintel and side frame elements. Four die markers distributed across both dies provide attribution support. The obverse carries two date-area diagnostics: a die dot between the numerals 1 and 4, and a die dot below the 1 — raised specks on struck coins that correspond to tiny pits in the die's date logotype area, likely introduced during die finishing. The reverse presents three die gouges in the inscription area: one on the inner side of the left upright of the first U of UNUM, one below the second U of PLURIBUS, and one to the lower right of the I of MONTICELLO. This distribution of reverse gouges across three widely separated inscription elements creates a triangulated fingerprint that uniquely identifies this working die. The 2014-P Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 75% copper / 25% nickel composition at 5.0 grams. The Return to Monticello reverse, with its detailed architectural rendering including doors, windows, columns, and steps, continues to serve as one of the most productive designs in American coinage for generating documentable doubled die varieties due to the geometric precision of its building facade.
