2014 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-014

Description

Identified by Stephen Young, this 2014-P Jefferson Nickel WDDR-014 displays Class VIII tilted hub doubling on the reverse, visible below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling results from the working hub being tilted at a slight angle during hubbing, creating a distinctive pattern where doubling radiates from a pivot point rather than showing uniform displacement. Felix Schlag's original 1938 reverse design of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate was restored to the nickel in 2006 following the Westward Journey series, and Monticello's architectural details continue to provide variety researchers with clear reference points for identifying doubling. Obverse die markers include a short slanted die gouge from the rim above the R of TRUST. On the reverse, a slanted die scratch runs from the O of OF to the rim, and a short die gouge appears inside the right upright of the second U of PLURIBUS. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 2014-P WDDR-014. These multiple die markers across both sides make this variety particularly attributable, as the combination provides a reliable fingerprint for this working die.
