2014 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-013

Description

Class VIII, Tilted Hub Doubling. Class VIII doubling shows below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello on this 2014 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel. The tilted hub mechanism produces doubling that shifts direction across the die face, with the doorframe area of Monticello being a focal point for detection on this variety. Jefferson Nickels bearing the Monticello reverse have been a staple of die variety collecting since the design's introduction in 1938, and the building's geometric architecture — columns, windows, and doorframes — offers clear reference lines against which displacement can be measured. Die markers assist in confirming this specific die: the obverse carries a small die chip above Jefferson's left eye, while the reverse displays a small die gouge to the upper right of the first A in AMERICA and a small die gouge above the small right window.
