Description

Attributed by John A. Wexler himself and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2014-P WDDR-009, this doubled die reverse on the 2014 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel is classified as Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling. The doubling manifests below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge (appearing as a dot) positioned below the dot above the I of LIBERTY. Reverse die markers document a small die gouge between the lower portions of the two L's of MONTICELLO, plus a die chip inside the upper portion of the second O of MONTICELLO. Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling occurs when the hub is tilted at a slight angle relative to the die surface during impression, causing variable displacement across the die face — areas near the tilt axis show minimal or no doubling, while areas furthest from the axis show the greatest offset. The concentration of visible doubling below the door frame on Monticello's center entrance suggests this area was furthest from the hub's tilt axis on this particular die. The 2014 Jefferson Nickel belongs to the Return to Monticello series (2006 to date), struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel, 5.000 grams, 21.2 mm). The multiple reverse die markers — the gouge between the L's and the die chip in the second O — provide robust secondary confirmation points for attributing this variety beyond the doubling alone.
