2014 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007

Description

Class VIII, Tilted Hub Doubling. Class VIII doubling shows above and below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello on this 2014 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel. Tilted hub doubling occurs when the hub and die are misaligned at a slight angle during impression, producing displacement that varies in direction across the die face — in this case concentrated around the architectural details of the building's entrance. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, with its rectilinear doorframes and columns, makes even subtle angular displacement visible under magnification. Die markers confirm attribution: the obverse carries a die chip on Jefferson's left eyebrow, while the reverse shows a die gouge below the center portion of the P in PLURIBUS, a die gouge below and between T and E of UNITED, and a die crack running from the right base of the building to the rim. Attributed by Stephen Young and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2014-P WDDR-007, this variety belongs to a notably prolific year for Jefferson Nickel doubled dies.
