2014 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-004 for the 2014 Jefferson Nickel, this Return to Monticello variety exhibits light spread southeast as an extra left central doorway roof on the Monticello facade. The southeast displacement creates a secondary roofline contour below and to the right of the primary impression, producing a subtle doubling effect visible in the architectural detail of Thomas Jefferson's iconic home. Die markers UVC-1824 and DMR-005 identify the specific working die across three documented stages. Stage A reaches Early Die State with a diagnostic small die gouge dot visible in the tall right window — a marker present from the die's earliest strikes — while the obverse also remains in EDS. Stage B and Stage C represent Mid and Late Die State respectively, both currently unconfirmed, meaning the variety has been primarily documented from early die state specimens. The tall right window die gouge provides a quick attribution checkpoint: locate the tall window on the right side of Monticello and examine it under magnification for a raised dot within the window aperture. The 2014-P Jefferson Nickel was struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel composition at 5.00 grams on 21.2mm planchets at the Philadelphia Mint. Examine the left central doorway roof area under 7x to 10x magnification for the secondary roofline impression displaced to the southeast from the primary design.
