2014 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
Strong spread toward the Southwest creates an extra left central doorway roof and bottom window frame on the Monticello reverse of this 2014 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, making DDR-002 one of the more visually prominent doubled dies in the Return to Monticello era that began in 2006. Die markers cataloged under UVC-1820 and DMR-003 track three stages: Stage A with both reverse and obverse at Early Die State, Stage B at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). The architectural elements of Monticello — particularly the doorways, window frames, and pediment — provide exceptionally precise reference points for doubled die identification because their straight lines and right angles make even small hub displacement clearly visible against the geometric framework. The strong Southwest spread creates ghost lines that parallel the original doorway and window structures, producing an unmistakable doubled architectural appearance at moderate magnification. Jamie Franki updated the Monticello reverse design in 2006 to restore the original "Return to Monticello" concept after the 2004-2005 Westward Journey interruption, and the refined detail on the 2006-onward reverse design provides cleaner diagnostic surfaces than earlier versions. Cataloged by VarietyVista, DDR-002 demonstrates that Jefferson Nickel variety production continues actively in the modern Return to Monticello era.
