2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-015

Description

Comparing doubled die reverse output across the America the Beautiful Quarters program reveals that certain designs generated far more varieties than others, and the 2013 Mount Rushmore issue produced one of the highest concentrations, as this WDDR-015 and its many companion varieties demonstrate. The program's 56 designs honored national parks, forests, seashores, and monuments from 2010 through 2021, with five new reverses introduced each year. Not all issues yielded significant numbers of doubled die varieties, making the Mount Rushmore quarter's prolific output a notable outlier. The Philadelphia Mint's production run employed numerous working dies, each created through hubbing where design transfer from hub to die can produce the positional errors that result in doubled dies. Joseph Menna's depiction of the four presidential faces carved into South Dakota granite provided distinctive design elements to examine for traces of doubling.
