Description

Joseph Menna's sculptural interpretation of Mount Rushmore for the 2013 ATB Quarter reverse was detailed, and this complexity contributed to the doubled die varieties cataloged for the Philadelphia Mint issue, including WDDR-006. Transferring Menna's design through reduction, master die, master hub, working hub, and finally to working dies involved multiple stages where slight misalignment could introduce doubling. Each stage represented an opportunity for the positional error that creates a doubled die variety. The carved faces of Washington and Jefferson, shown with workers on scaffolding, provided an abundance of fine detail on the quarter's reverse that makes even minor doubling detectable under magnification. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 2013-P 25c SD WDDR-006. The ATB program's consistent use of detailed scenic reverses across its 56 issues created favorable conditions for die varieties throughout its twelve-year run.
