2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004
ErrorDescription
Appearing on the 2013 Mount Rushmore National Park quarter from Philadelphia, the WDDR-004 shows doubling on the lower part of Thomas Jefferson's nose — referring to the sculpted presidential likeness carved into the granite monument depicted on the coin's reverse, not a portrait on the obverse. The Wexler Team attributed this regular strike variety under the designation 2013-P 25c SD WDDR-004, with SD indicating South Dakota, where the memorial is located. Obverse die markers include a die gouge left of the D in DOLLAR, several long die gouges above the NIT in UNITED, a gouge inside the upper curve of the first S in STATES, and a short die scratch extending north from the top of the O in OF, along with very short die scratches just below the ear. On the reverse, very small die scratches appear just northwest of the doubling area. The Mount Rushmore design's detailed facial carvings provide an unusual and engaging surface for doubled die study among America the Beautiful quarter varieties.
